I don’t listen to many podcasts. I love public radio but I never seem to find the time to just sit and listen to a story more than a few minutes long. After much battering from my teachers, I decided to check out S-Town, a nonfiction, narrative podcast, and I was not disappointed.

A horologist, or clock maker, John B. McLemore, emails the producers of This American Life because he claims someone in his hometown killed someone and is bragging about it. He lives in Woodstock Alabama, “Sh*t Town” as he refers to it as, hence the name. He calls it that because he believes no one cares. No one cares about things he believes are extremely pressing matters, like climate change, the water supply, and trashy tattoos. And as Brian Reed, the NPR reporter covering the story works with John to solve this “so called murder,” it becomes so much more than an investigation. It becomes a statement on mental disorder, an odd, pessimistic altruism, and human nature.
